アメリカの硬貨なんて全く使わない。私はコロナの真っ只中に渡米したのでクレジットカードに甘やかされてきた。従ってどれが何セントか全く分からない。釣り銭で貰うことはあっても使うことはない。
ワシントン通りにある中華系スーパーで50セントのネギだけを買ったら10ドル以下はクレジットカード決済不可と言われた。多少の硬貨があったので探してみたが全然分からない。仕方ないので比較的大きめの硬貨をいくつか手に取ってレジのおばさんに見せたら2つ取られた。どうやら25セントだったらしい。
一応言い訳しておくとアメリカのコインは異様に分かりづらい。片面におじさんの横顔、もう片面に鳥などの絵柄がコインいっぱいに描かれていて肝心の数字が無い。よく見ると絵柄の下に文字があって、50セント硬貨はHALF DOLLAR、25セントはQUATER DOLLARとある。10セントはONE DIMEである(ダイムって何？)。何だこのアホなシステムは。なぜ変わらないんだ。ちなみに1セントはONE CENTで、小さいし赤銅色なので多少は分かりやすい。5セントはFIVE CENT (HALF DIMEじゃないんかい)。1ドル硬貨も存在する(紙幣でいいだろ)。
I never use American coins. I arrived in the midst of the pandemic, and I've been spoiled by credit cards. Consequently, I have no idea which coin represents what value in cents.
While shopping at a Chinese supermarket on Washington Avenue, I tried to buy 50 cents worth of green onions alone, but was told they don't accept credit card payments for amounts under $10. I had some coins, so I tried to figure it out, but it was completely confusing. So, I picked a few relatively larger coins, showed them to the cashier, and she took two. It turns out they were 25-cent coins.
As a small disclaimer, American coins are unusually hard to distinguish. One side is full of a side profile of a man, while the other is covered in a motif like a bird with no discernible numbers. Upon closer inspection, there is text beneath the motif, stating "HALF DOLLAR" for the 50-cent coin, "QUARTER DOLLAR" for the 25-cent coin, and "ONE DIME" for the 10-cent coin (what's dime?). What a ridiculous system, and why hasn't it changed? By the way, the 1-cent coin is "ONE CENT," and it's small and copper-colored, making it somewhat recognizable. The 5-cent coin is "FIVE CENT" (not HALF DIME). There's even a 1-dollar coin (isn't paper money enough?)
