フィラデルフィアには店舗のドアを開けてくれるおじさんがいる。CVS(薬局)やWawa(コンビニ)のドアの前に居て、客の出入りに合わせて扉を開閉してくれる。これだけ聞くと高級ブランド店のドアマンを想像されかねないが、ここはフィリーである。ホームレスのような見すぼらしい身なりのおじさんが店の許可なくドアマンをやっているだけである。理由としては、どうやら彼らに小銭や食料を渡している人がいるようだ。彼らに危険性は無いが私は全く関わらないようにしている。もちろん何もあげない。とりあえず「どうも」と言っておく。
In Philadelphia, there are men who open doors for you at stores. They stand or sit in front of doors at places like CVS (pharmacy) or Wawa (convenience store), and they open and close the doors according to the coming and going of customers. Just hearing this might conjure up images of doormen at high-end brand stores, but this is Philly. These are shabby old men, some looking like they could be homeless, performing the role of a doorman without the store's permission. It seems that some people give them small change or food. While there doesn't seem to be any danger associated with them, I prefer not to get involved and, of course, don't give them anything. I simply say, "Thank you."
