周知の通りアメリカには謎の単位が多いが、一番意味不明なのがProofである。私の研究室では実験用に純度100%のエタノール(お酒に入っているアルコール)を常備しているが、ボトルには200 Proofと書いてある。アルコール度数40度のウイスキーのボトルにも80 Proofと書いてある。つまり二倍しただけである。しかし二倍にする必要は全くない。私の偏見にまみれた妄想では昔テキサスかどこかで「お前の酒は何度だ？」「俺のは80だ」「おお強えな」といった具合に勝手に二倍にして強そうに見せていただけだと思われる。とまあ、たまにはRebuild(テック系のポッドキャスト)のhakさんみたいな与太話もしてみたくなるものである。悪しからず。

As is well known, the United States has many mysterious units, but the most incomprehensible is "Proof." In my research lab, we keep 100% purity ethanol (the alcohol in alcoholic beverages) for experiments, but the bottle is labeled "200 Proof." Even a bottle of whiskey, with an alcohol content of 40%, is labeled "80 Proof." Essentially, it's just doubled. However, there's no need to double it at all. In my biased imagination, perhaps in Texas or somewhere, people used to boast about their alcohol content like, "How strong is your drink?" "Mine's 80 proof." "Wow, that's strong," doubling it up just to appear tough. Sometimes, I feel like engaging in these kinds of whimsical fictions, akin to those by hak from Rebuild (a tech podcast).
